Advertising

In class we are discussing a new unit called advertising. I find this unit to be really interesting because you get to learn what all these commercials mean and also why they make these certain advertisments. I never really thought about it that way. In class you get to hear everybody's perspective on things and its cool to hear what others think. Overall i really enjoyed all of the different units we did this semester. I feel like i actually learned something.

Freytags Triangle

Introduction- The story begins with a guy named Elwin Ransom and he is on a walking trip in the English Midlands where he comes upon a cottage in an attempt to find a place to sleep. A women lives in this cottage with her son who works late nights and was worried when her son didnt arrive on time. The women said that she would give him a place to sleep if he went and brought her son home. So he goes to the estate where he is at and this is where things get interesting.

Rising action- Ransom, knowing two of the boys at the estate, goes inside thier house where they offer him something to drink. This is when they drug him. When he tries to escape they hit him on the head and he loses consciousness. The kid Weston that Ransom knows is a scientists who has discovered a way to travel into space and needs a third person to travel with them.

Climax- Ransom awakes finding himself on a ship going through space to a planet Malacandra. As soon as they land Ransom escapes from Devine and Weston and is now on his own on this strange plant. Ransom ends up meeting a creature which he eventually comes to know as the hross named hyoi. He becomes a guest at the hyois village and learns about thier culture.

Falling action- The hrossa ask ransom to join them in hunting a hnakra which is a water creature that is a danger to the planet. they find it and kill it and then Ransoms friend hyoi is shot and killed be Devine and Weston. Oyarsa allow Ransom to return home with the option of staying but Ransom chooses to leave because he wants to back with human beings.

Resolution- The space ship makes it back to earth and Ransom questions if what all just happened was true or was he dreaming and it turns out to be true and then he goes on to dedicating himself to the mission that the oyarsa gave him before he left which was stopping Weston from further evil.

Conflicts within "Out of the Silent Planet"

In the reading that i have done so far i have noticed a few conflicts. The three that i noticed were:

• Man vs. Nature/Ransom vs. Malacandra: I say this because Ransom was faced with a whole new environment that was totally different from earth's. He was all alone and noticed many differences between earth and Malacandra such as all the lakes, streams, and rivers were all warm, the plants and mountains were oddly tall and thin and gravity was significantly less on this plant. He didn't know what to expect or even how he was going to stay alive.
• Man vs. Man/Ransom vs. Sorns: I say this because while they were all on the spaceship awaiting their landing on this planet, Ransom over hears Devine and Weston talking about whether they should drug him before handing him over to the sorns or allow him to stay conscious which he then fears the worst and as they get off of the ship they have an encounter with them and thats when Ransom escapes, the sorns going after him. So now he has to watch wherever he goes making sure the sorns arent around.
• Man vs. Self/Ransom vs. Himself: I say this because after he escapes from Devine and Weston he is all by himself on this strange planet with no one to talk to. He then starts talking to himself just to keep himself calm and to help him get through the days/nights not knowing whether he is going to survive the next day.

These were the most prevalent conflicts in my story so far but as i read i will probably come across more

Final thoughts on "The Empire Stirkes Back"

Overall i thought this movie was very confusing. It had my attention most of the movie but i was always trying to figure out what was happening. i didnt totally hate the movie though. i found it to be cool that it was the original movie and seeing that the special effects were definitly nothing like you would see in todays films. i find it would be helpful to watch the other movies then watch that..i would probably understand it a whole lot more. i prefer to watch the newer version over the old one.

The Empire Strikes Back

Today in class we watched a movie called The Empire Strikes Back. The movie itself is not something that i would watch on my own but i found it to be ineresting in that it was the original movie. This movie had many themes and one that i recognized was how friendship was important in the movie. Han Solo and Luke Skywalker seemed to always have each others back and always looking out for one another. Also something that had me wondering was why Princess Leia is so afraid of Han Solo? It seems as if she has something against him and I could not figure it out. I also noticed that Han Solo is very outspoken and likes things to go his way.

Faith and Out of the Silent Planet

I am reading Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis and just to summerize what has happened since i last posted my first summary is Ransom, the main character, is now off of the space ship that he was on for quite some time and is now on the planet malacandra. He escapes from his two kidnappers almost coming close to death when he has an encounter with the sorns and is now on his own. He is experienceing a whole different world by himself where he comes in contact with many strange creatures and things you could never dream of.

I feel that faith is involved in this book because Ransom has faith in himself that he is going to make it off of this planet alive and he is going to do so all by himself with only the clothes on his back and a knife in his pocket. He feels that he will do anything to survive and you need to have faith in yourself to really be able to do so.

Since we have talked more in depth about this short story it really made me think. realizing that this other civilization that they found was almost human like was interesting because maybe there is other life out there. i was also confused because of the whole science and religion and science and faith thing. it wasnt clear to me why science anf faith couldnt go together. i did like talking more about the story though. u go beyond just the story itself and explore the meanings behind things which to me makes the story more fun. i really like disscussing after we read. it really benefits me alot.

The Star

Today in class we read a short story called The Star. I found this to be somewhat hard to understand but finally came to understand what they were talking about. It was about a group of space explorers from earth who traveled to this destroyed civilization in a place that was far away from our sun. It was pretty interesting once i actually knew what was going on. What i want to know is how did they know about this other civilization? And why did they blame God? One of the main points of the story was how this civilization got destroyed. It was wiped out by the sun when it went supernova. This story makes you think could there really be life somewhere else besides earth? What i also found interesting was how this stories characters were realistic even though it was in the future. I found this interesting because when you think of science fiction you think of creatures and aliens but when i read this it was the total opposite. I also was wondering what the two latin phrases meant in this story. What i also really enjoyed about this story was how it was based around an event that could maybe even happen one day.

A brief summary so far

So far my book is about a guy named Ransom who is on a walking- tour and he comes across a women as he is walking who thinks he is her son returning home from work. When she realizes itisnt her son she gets frantic and explains to ransom that her son should of been home already and she was worried. So the women asks Ransom to go over to The Rise where her son was at and check on him. Ransom agrees to do so and goes on his way. He reaches the rise and gets in and finds some boys fighting with her son. Ransom ends up knowing the two boys and they offer him a drink and a place to sleep. They take him inside and end up drugging him so they can do their experiment. Then he wakes up in a dark place and doesnt know where he is at comming to realize that he is on a spaceship heading away from earth. I find this book to be pretty easy to understand so far and find it interesting as well. some parts are hard to understand but all in all i like it.
